Darwin

As the major centre in the Northern Territory Darwin is the gateway to the Kakadu National Park and the many islands off the coast. It has a population of around 125,000 making it by far the largest and most populated city in the sparsely populated Northern Territory, but the least populous of all of Australia's capital cities. It is the smallest and most northerly of the major Australian cities, and acts as the "top end's" regional centre. It has has grown from being a pioneer outpost and small port into one of Australia's most modern and multicultural cities and its  proximity to Asia makes it an important gateway to this region. The Stuart Highway is the most important road transport artery beginning in Darwin and ending at Port Augusta in South Australia.

A magnificent fiery sunset over Cullen Bay.

The intense sunset colours remained well after the sun had set. This is the "Arafura Pearl" in Cullen Bay harbour - a ferry that transports passengers to areas west of Darwin.

A dramatic silhouette of the these spiky palms set blackly against the rich reds and violets of the sunset sky.

Yachts and reflections in the Cullen Bay Marina.
